Challenges before Mamata Banerjee
India Forum: Comments, Opinion - Information Resource
News Summary: The 2011 assembly polls gave a very different picture to us. The results of two states were quite surprising but the most surprising and interesting result is that of the poll results in West Bengal. Trinamool Congress chief came into the limelight with the defeat of the Left Front. This defeat for the Left Front is one of the worst defeat. But it is also not a smooth road for the Mamata government. Her government when it comes to power has to face a lot of challenges. How will she handle these .....read more in: Challenges before Mamata Banerjee

Even Gandhi-Nehru were anti-Bengali, although West Bengal had Congress Government Since 1947 to 1966, it could not escape discriminations against the Bengalees:
1) The whole of the Mymansingh district was given away to Pakistan, although only 50 percent of the population were Muslims. There was a referendum, Gandhi asked the Hindus not to participate. Gandhi"s fear was that in that case, Assam would be a Bengalee majority state.
2) India"s foreign exchange earnings from Tea and Jute were spent on the developent of other states.
3) Coal bearing district Dhanbad, which was almost all Bengalee was given to Bihar. That was a great loss of revenue.

4) IISCO was about to be close in 1965-66 because the central government refused to give any order to IISCO.

5) There was a famine in 1974 in West Bengal but Jagjivan Ram refused to send ant relief saying Bengalis have no purchasing power to buy food, so it would be useless to send relief. Thiusands died in starvations during a Congress Government in West Bengal.

6) Vajpayee refused to give even one Rupee to the victims of a massive flood in 2000-1 when thousands died and at least 20000 became holeless.

7) In 1996, South Indians in the CPI(M)( Sitaram Yachury, Pravat Karat etc) refused to allow Jyoti Basu to be the PM, but another south Indian Deva Gaura was perfectly acceptable to them.

Other states, if they are Marathi, Gujarati, Marwari, or Tamils do not suffer even if they elect a party which is not in power in West Bengal.

4 S.Ghosh on Jun-21 :

Commie Soviet Union and East European countries were highly developed. China is also developed. Because they can control their money, West Bengal as it is not a country, has no control over its money.

West Bengal has to give up 70 percent of the taxes it collect each year to the Central Government. The money that is left over is just enough to pay for the civil servants; there is no money for developments.

Before 1995, West Bengal was restricted by License-permit-quota Raj; nothing was given to West Bengal. After 1995 Mamata-Nepalese-Maoists came to stop all developments through the private sector.

3 Mo on Jun-21 :

I hear the outcry. The issue however is how come commie hollow junk heads
keep getting elected. Even a cartoon like Yechury who is kicked out of south
gets himself elected in Kolkota.

When opposition parties in TN and pre-Cong AP and non-jokerlal state of gujarat marched forward on development, why did WB choose to fall behind ?
Coming to my point, so many many times repeated in past here, and I repeat
because I love WB - WB"s non-development is not because of crime of election
of opposition party, but because of commie striking picketing laal jhanda failaying culture.
2 S.Ghosh on Jun-21 :

Problems of West Bengal was caused by the Nehru government since 1947, when the Hindu refugees from East Pakistan were asked by Nehru to go back to Pakistan, He has refused any rehabilitation for them. That is the reason there are so many Shanti town in and around Calcutta.
Then the whole of West Bengal was declared a developed area and it could not get any central project. Durgapur Steel plant in exchange for the State Bank of India head office ( shifted to Bombay). Then everything were shifted away from West Bengal: LIC, General Insurance, Geological Survey, Zoological Survey, head offices of all banks, major companies even the Jute Research Institute. Private companies could not get any license, permit, quota and closed down one after another or shifted to Maharastra. That was before 1970.

Since 1977, West Bengal could not get any money because it had committed the crime of electing an opposition party always since then.

Without looking at the history one cannot find out the clue. Mamata Banerjee is considered as the Curse of West Bengal, in the way she drove out Tata Motors from Singur and Mitsubishi Chemicals from Nandigram. Her followers are thugs and criminals. However, EVM is there, so all these does not matter at all.
1 S.Ghosh on Jun-21 :

Swift action by the Government can stop communal violence within the existing legal framework. In 1984, only 4 Sikhs were killed in the entire West Bengal, as the Government asked both the police and the ruling party ( then CPI(M)) to come out to the streets and protect the Sikhs.

However, both in 1960 and in 1979 hundreds if not thousands of Hindu Bengalis were killed in Assam by the Ahom tribes ( who are not even Indian; they came from China via Thailand in 14th century) because the Government of Assam, incuding Fakir Uddin Ali Ahmed, who later became the President of India during the Emergency rule) supported that riots.

Thus, it is the attitude of the government which is important. One should not expect that Hindus, who are minorities in NE India will be protected by the respective Governments, no matter what the proposed bill is. Hindu minorities could not get any protection in Jammu & Kashmir or in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh recently.
